Hypermedia Online Publishing: the Transformation of the Scholarly Journal

14.3.1 Purpose and significance

The purpose and importance of this research was defined at the beginning of the thesis in section 1.3 as being "to examine the transforming potentials of the new electronic publishing technologies and their effect on the traditional scholarly journal". The study "attempted to look at what has happened to date and predict what might happen in the future", applying a model of an ecology of communicative transactions to the specific ecology that is scholarly journal publishing. In other words, the thesis was defining a model and then applying it to this specific domain. To the best of my knowledge no-one else has done this.
